Comics
The speech bubbles are empty. The pictures tell the whole story on their own — who is frightened, who is kind, what went wrong — and your child decides what everybody actually said.
Read one in colour on a phone, or print the black-and-white version and let them write in the bubbles and colour it in. Same story either way.
What they're learning while they do it
Nudge's First Day at School — What goes in the bag, which strap goes on which arm, finding your own peg, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Nobody is told any of that. It just happens in the pictures, which is the only way a five-year-old takes it in.
